Philosophy and Purpose
This scholarship was established to provide financial support for a relative of a current or retired employee of the Brockport Auxiliary Service Corporation including Parking and the College Bookstore with demonstrated academic achievement and either leadership qualities or community service.
Eligibility, Criteria, and Application Process
Applicant must:
- Be a blood, spousal or "context" relative of a person who has worked for at least two years or retired from Brockport Auxiliary Service Corporation at The College at Brockport. "Context" is defined as someone who resides in the home of a current or former employee (such as a stepchild).
- Be accepted for enrollment as an undergraduate student at The College at Brockport as a regular admit freshman or transfer student OR be a full-time undergraduate student at the College taking at least 12 credit hours.
- Possess a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
- Work at least part-time while attending The College at Brockport or high school if an in-coming freshman or transfer student. The work need not be with BASC.
Application packet checklist:
- All applications must be typed and submitted electronically to betty.drennen@basc1.org. The subject line should read "Sandra Mason Scholarship application."
- All applications should include a cover sheet including the following information:
- Name
- Banner ID # (for current College at Brockport students only)
- Campus/Local address and phone numbers
- Email address
- Academic major
- Class year, credits earned, and cumulative GPA
- Name of the employee who is currently employed or was employed by BASC, including the unit of employment AND the candidate's relationship to BASC employee.
- An essay, of no more than two typewritten pages indicating the reason why the candidate feels they are deserving of this scholarship. Reasons MUST include financial need, academic achievement, and either demonstrated leadership qualities or demonstrated community service.
- Include at least two, but no more than three, letters of recommendation.
Number and Scheduling of Award
- The assistance is in the form of a $1,000 educational expense grant to one eligible student each year. The scholarship does not automatically renew; however, a recipient may re-apply for this scholarship each year as long as he/she continues to meet the eligibility requirements.
- The award will be credited to the student's bill during the semester(s) following receipt. The recipient must use this award for educational expenses at The College at Brockport and may not receive the award in cash.
- The scholarship is funded with the intention of making annual awards. Further awards are based on the same criteria and selection process for as long as funds are available.
Selection Process
- The Sandra A. Mason Scholarship selection committee, consisting of the BASC executive director and her direct reports, will select recipients based on the criteria above (financial need 60%, academic achievement 20%, leadership or community service 20%) and follow the timeline set annually by The College at Brockport.
- The award committee chair will notify, in writing, the recipient, the Director of the Office of Scholarships, Brockport College Foundation, Inc., Office of Financial Aid, and BASC Executive Director Emeritus Sandra Mason.
- The award committee chair will also notify, in writing, each applicant who was not a recipient of the award.
The 2012 deadline for submitting application packets is February 29.
