Safety BINGO Rules

Safety BINGO helps remind employees on a daily basis about workplace safety, promotes teamwork, and rewards employees for safe work practices resulting in no accidents.

All full-time, part-time and temporary employees and all student managers who are on active work status are eligible to play Safety Bingo and will receive their personalized bingo card on their first day of work. They will play all Safety Bingo games on copies of the same card throughout their employment with BASC. Additional copies of the personalized bingo cards will be kept in the unit where each employee works.

Additional rules include:

  • Safety Bingo will start with a $50.00 prize at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

  • The prizes for the next three games will increase by $50 each ($100, $150, $200) if no accidents occur and stay at this prize until there is an accident. Upon an accident the prize will start at $50 again.

  • If a qualifying accident (an "ouch") occurs, a new game starts the day after the accident and the prize goes back to start at $50 again.
  • A qualifying accident is one that results in time off or in medical treatment by a doctor or nurse.
  • The manager or supervisor will immediately notify Human Resources when a qualifying accident occurs. Human Resources will notify all units by e-mail that an "ouch" has occurred and that a new game will start. A new calendar board will be posted in each unit for the new game and fresh copies of the personalized bingo cards will be distributed to all eligible employees at the unit level.
  • Each day that no accident occurs, Human Resources will draw a new bingo number and notify each unit via e-mail of the number. The new number will be entered on the calendar board as well as the type of "ouch" and unit it occurred in. . New numbers are drawn every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings for the previous day. Numbers for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are drawn every Monday morning.
  • When an employee believes that he/she has bingo, he/she must notify his/her unit manager or supervisor, who will verify the numbers by comparing them with copies of the personalized bingo cards on file in that unit. The manager or supervisor will contact Human Resources, where the numbers will also be verified. When a winner is announced, fresh copies of the personalized cards will be distributed at the unit level and a new calendar board will be posted next to the old calendar board.
  • The old board will remain posted for one week to allow employees who don't see the board every day due to scheduling or absences an opportunity to check to see if they have bingo. If after one week no other winners have come forth, the prize will be awarded.
  • In the event of multiple winning claims, Human Resources will determine who was the first to win by comparing the copy of each employee's personalized card with the bingo numbers chosen on the master sheet.
  • Due to the seasonal employment nature of BASC's operations, it would be unfair to penalize employees for being unable to play during long layoffs. Therefore, Bingo Bonus Days have been established at the end of the fall and spring semesters. On each Bingo Bonus Day, numbers will be chosen until there is a winner. A new game will start the day after for all eligible employees who are working through the break. (See Safety Bingo Time Line for further explanation.)
  • In case of ties, the prize will be split evenly.
